Stumbled upon this very handy tool, made by Mark Russinovich of Sysinternals fame. He now works for Microsoft, so it has moved to microsoft’s technet. It defragments files you specify in the command prompt.

So if you put contig in c:\tools\contig, then
“c:\tools\contig\contig.exe -s g:\games\coh\*.*” will defragment all files in your company of heroes folder ;). Very handy and it certainly increases the loading speed, especially of games. Also people use it to defragment their Outlook pst file.

What you can also do, is make a batch file that starts up a certain app and put the contig defrag statements for that app in the batch file, so before the app starts, it’s files will be nicely defragmented and will operate more smoothly !

You can find it at microsoft’s technet sysinternal tools.
